Why this matters

Resource efficiency starts with knowing where physical flows enter and leave the venue. Electricity and water can be metered; waste can be weighed and followed to a destination; food and temporary materials can be linked to the number of people served.

The useful comparison is rarely one percentage. This hub keeps absolute use beside normalized indicators so a busy season does not look inefficient simply because more people attended — and a quiet season does not disguise higher consumption per event.

Measure energy, water and waste in their native units first

Carbon conversion is important, but it should not erase the physical system. Electricity needs kWh and kW peak; fuel needs volume or energy content; water needs cubic metres split by potable, reclaimed or captured sources where relevant; waste needs kilograms or tonnes by final destination. Keeping the original units lets operators diagnose equipment, leaks, load patterns and service contracts before translating results into emissions.

Choose denominators that explain how the venue was used

Annual totals hide changes in occupancy and event mix. Pair them with floor area, event count, operating hours, attendance or meals served according to the resource. No single normaliser works for every question. kWh per square metre helps with building performance, kWh per attendee helps with event intensity, litres per attendee helps with crowd-related water use, and grams of food waste per cover belongs to catering rather than the whole venue.

Close the loop with invoices, meters and destinations

A reporting chain is strongest when it can be traced from a dashboard back to source records. Utility invoices establish totals; submeters locate loads; waste tickets and contractor statements show destinations; procurement records explain material inflows. When renewable electricity or recycling is claimed, keep the evidence for the accounting treatment and the physical destination visible. This prevents a broad sustainability label from obscuring weak data underneath.
